Why They Overheat in Traffic

The XK engine was built for 1960s roads, and a Mk2 will creep up the temperature gauge in a modern summer queue. Left unchecked, heat does real damage — but it is very fixable.

Why they run hot

The original engine-driven fan moves plenty of air at speed but little at a standstill, exactly when you need it. Add a furred radiator, an ageing water pump, or coolant without a proper corrosion inhibitor, and the margin disappears in slow traffic. The alloy cylinder head makes coolant condition especially important.

What overheating damages

On the XK, sustained heat leads to dropped valve guides (a knock), corrosion of the aluminium head's water galleries, failed core plugs and, at the extreme, head-gasket trouble.

The fixes

  • An electric fan is the single most effective cure.
  • A recored or modern alloy radiator restores capacity.
  • A healthy water pump, correct thermostat and fresh coolant with a corrosion inhibitor keep it stable.
  • Correct ignition timing and a mixture that isn't too lean also matter.
